When will the new Level 3 Te Marautanga o Aotearoa achievement standards be eligible to contribute to the 14 credits in each of three approved subjects?
Students on the Maori-medium pathway will be eligible to have their achievements count towards University Entrance this year.
Why can鈥檛 a student not on a M膩ori-medium pathway have access to the new TMoA subjects?
The new subjects and the associated standards are derived from and are aligned with the M膩ori-medium curriculum, Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. Courses delivered in a kaupapa M膩ori context are aligned to the principles and intent of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. Only students undertaking their learning within a kaupapa M膩ori context will be undertaking standards as part of a subject within coherent learning programmes aligned to the principles and intent of TMoA.
The definition of kaupapa M膩ori is:
- significant use of Te Reo M膩ori (i.e. the school is at levels one or two of the M膩ori language immersion levels); and
- M膩ori education that incorporates a M膩ori world view; and:
- incorporates ways of teaching in a range of settings, including bilingual and immersion settings (English and M膩ori); and
- delivers the Te Marautanga o Aotearoa curriculum subjects in te reo M膩ori only, or in both te reo M膩ori and English.
I am a teacher in a mainstream school which is not at levels one or two of the M膩ori language immersion levels. Why can鈥檛 my students be awarded one of the new subjects if they achieve 14 credits in the identified standards in English?
The new TMoA subjects and the associated standards are derived from and aligned with the M膩ori-medium curriculum, Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. Courses delivered in a kaupapa M膩ori context are aligned to the principles and intent of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
Some of the new Level 3 Te Marautanga o Aotearoa standards are included in several subjects. Does this mean that a standard can count towards more than one approved subject?
No, a standard can only be counted once in the calculation of the 14 credits in each of three subjects鈥 requirement, as is currently the case.
I am a teacher in a kura and I want to offer a p奴taiao programme. Can I choose any of the standards under science/p奴taiao, or am I restricted to just the p奴taiao standards?
Any of the standards with the p奴taiao subject can be used. There are no restrictions.
Will the New Zealand Record of Achievement show achievement of these new subjects?
The New Zealand Record of Achievement only records whether University Entrance has been awarded or not. It does not identify the subjects a student may have achieved to meet the University Entrance requirement for 14 credits in each of three approved subjects.
